Cancio Covas & Santiago, LLP was founded in July 2002 by the former Chairman and two of the principal partners of the Corporate Finance and Banking department of a major Puerto Rico law firm. Juan Ramón Cancio brings over 20 years of experience in the practice of corporate and business law, with specialties in banking, securities, health, and real estate law. The other two partners in the firm, Carlos Santiago and Jorge Covas Mendoza each have approximately ten years of experience in these fields, and together with Cancio have been involved in hundreds of complex corporate and financial matters and transactions. The founding partners of the firm constitute one of the leading local corporate and financial practice groups representing companies and other business entities at all stages of their development and growth, as well as the investment banks, venture funds, commercial banks and other financial institutions that finance them. The firm represents companies and individuals in connection with mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and leveraged buyouts, as well as other corporate combinations and restructurings. Among other nationally and internationally recognized banks and financial institutions that have structured transactions connected to Puerto Rico, our team has served as the principal advisor and transactional counsel for the construction, corporate, asset based lending, workout, and structured finance divisions of Puerto Rico's largest commercial bank. The members of the firm also have substantial experience in real estate and construction matters and have represented purchaser, sellers, mortgagees, mortgagors, and developers of real property in Puerto Rico, including shopping centers, office buildings, residential and commercial developments. Additionally, it has advised individuals, corporations, and other entities in the creation of trust arrangements tailored to particular situations, and designed to assist individuals with wealth accumulation and preservations. The firm is also engaged in the fields of municipal and corporate finance and regularly represents some of Puerto Rico's leading corporations and individuals engaged in all areas of business and industry, financial and commercial institutions, investment banks and governmental authorities in the public and private issuance of municipal bonds and corporate securities. In addition to acting as bond counsel and underwriter's counsel in connection with these financings, members of the firm frequently acts as borrower's counsel and letter of credit bank counsel, as well as legal counsel for the various other parties that may participate in the issuance of debt and equity securities.
